There are various forms of runes and magickal writings that exist and can be used somewhat sucessfully for magickal purposes. One thing that people tend to forget, especially with Runes, is that simply writing an English phrase into Runes does not instantly make it magickal.
For example - I have need to write down words for a spell, so I decide to use some runes:

And boy does that look cool and magicky! However, all it says is "This is a spell" in a Rune font I downloaded.

The better way to use runes is to learn about their deeper meanings. Each one is
thought to represent a particular "thing" (be it love, power, wealth, strength, fertility etc) and is closer to a historically correct use of the symbols.
If you wish to write so that few(er) people are likely to understand what you have written the it is possible to use runes or other magickal scripts in order to keep things private, then that's a different thing completely.
To download various fonts which are free for non-commercial use, I reccomend www.dafont.com
There are plenty of articles online as to the meanings and symbolical significances of various runic writtings, so I am not going to discus that here (and i am certainly no expert on the subject). So here is a website for some basic assosiations of runes:
